Why shop sprays rarely get rid of pests

A spray is the first thing many people buy. It kills the insects you can see, but the problem often comes back. Here is why, and when you can still deal with it yourself.

It only hits the ones you can see

Most pests hide in cracks, behind skirting boards, in mattress seams and in walls. A spray kills the ones you hit, but not the ones in hiding.

Eggs and cocoons survive

Cockroach eggs are in a hard capsule, fleas in a cocoon, and bed bug eggs are stuck in cracks. A couple of weeks later a new generation hatches and it all starts again.

Insects scatter

A strong spray scares insects off. Cockroaches and bed bugs move into other rooms or next door, ant colonies split, and the problem spreads.

Insects adapt

Some cockroach populations have become resistant to certain widely available products, so they need to be tackled with different methods.

When you can deal with it yourself

  • Pantry moths: by throwing out infested food and cleaning the shelves. How to do it.
  • A few ants in spring: by closing the entry and putting sweets away.
  • A single fly or mosquito in the room: open the window.
When it's better to call

Bed bugs and cockroaches usually need a professional. The sooner you start, the cheaper it is.
