Moth removal: clothes and pantry moths
Holes in a wool jumper or small moths in the kitchen? The damage is done not by the moths but by their larvae. We'll tell you how to get rid of both kinds.
Moth removalprice from a photoClothes moth or pantry moth?
There are two main kinds of moth in homes, and they're dealt with differently.
A small, pale golden moth in dark wardrobes. The larvae eat wool, silk, fur and carpets.
Small holes, especially in wool and cashmere clothes that haven't been worn for a while.
A moth with two-coloured wings flies around the kitchen, especially near lights in the evening.
Threads and clumps in flour, grains, nuts or cereal, and larvae crawling on the ceiling.
Why moths come back
Catching the moths alone won't get rid of them.
The damage is done by larvae hiding in clothes or food where you can't see them.
The larvae move through cracks, shelf corners and under carpets.
One infested bag of flour is enough for the moths to come back to every shelf.

Does lavender or cedar wood help?
They may put the moths off a little, but they don't kill the larvae already in your clothes.
Do infested clothes have to be thrown out?
Not always. Washing, freezing or dry cleaning is often enough. Badly damaged clothes are better thrown out.
Where do pantry moths come from?
Most often they come in with food you've bought, such as flour, nuts or pet food.
Are moths a health risk?
No, but infested food shouldn't be eaten, and clothes moths can ruin expensive things.
