Silverfish removal
Small silvery insects in the bathroom that run off when you switch on the light? Those are silverfish. They don't bite, but they point to damp.
How to recognise silverfish
A silverfish is about 1 cm long, silvery grey, with three tail threads. It lives in warm, damp places.
When you switch on the light, silverfish quickly run under the bath or behind the skirting boards.
Most often in the bathroom, toilet, kitchen and basement.
They eat starch and paper: books, documents, wallpaper paste.
Larger, greyer silverfish with long tails also live in drier rooms in new buildings.
Why they keep coming back
Silverfish love damp, so they come back unless it's reduced.
If the bathroom is poorly ventilated, it's ideal for silverfish.
They hide in skirting boards, tile joints and pipes, where sprays can't reach.
A silverfish lives for several years and can go a long time without food.
